Observer Guidelines

The observer committee has been hard at work establishing processes in preparation for the World Championship. The committee consists of 5 members:

  • Jakub Visek - Czech Republic

  • Victor Domingo - Philippines

  • Stewart Kuo - Taiwan

  • Dan Abrams - USA

  • Ezra Dantowitz - USA

Here you will find the observer guidelines adapted by the committee from USA Roundnet’s observer content.

Once you feel confident in your knowledge of the observer guidelines, take the online test to see if you meet the certification standards. Note, this process is specifically for the World Championship and may be modified in the future to include a more robust certification process.

Worlds Observing Principles

Core Ideas

  • Guaranteed observers for Quarterfinals on

  • Cannot have an observer from a nation represented in a match, unless the match is between teams from the same nation or all players endorse it

    • Example: if Canada is playing Germany, observers cannot be from either Canada or Germany.

    • But if US is playing US in individual bracket, then observers can be from US (or any other country)

  • Each nation must have 4 certified observers who are willing to observe during the tournament

    • As a growing sport, we need the players to chip in to create the capability for quality observed matches

    • Certified observers must pass exam and attend observer check in/review at Worlds

    • This review will likely take place on Thursday during pool play of the Mixed event, or the lunch break

  • For players who are signed up to observe, they must check in with the Tournament or Observer Coordinator once they are done playing. That way they can be assigned to matches to observe

Observer Culture

  • Want to set a tone for observing internationally

  • Give opportunity for people to practice observing and gain experience, while balancing having quality observers for big matches

  • Players should respect observers and understand they are volunteering and doing their best

  • This will be a good way to spread observing culture and experience for the global community

Prioritizing Observers

  • The goal is to have 3 observers available for every match in the quarterfinals and on

  • Prior to quarterfinals, observers will be assigned where available, with priority given to matches between teams seeded more closely, or matches between higher ranked teams (in squad bracket)
